Using emails for business, you always receive many massages. For example, your email is hr@mycompany.com, there has many inbound email messages from applicants, your companionship, you customer,etc. One day, you might have a vacation privately, you must need auto responder to reply the messages to them automatically.
You might leave the message; "I am going on my vacation, might not open your message about 4-5 days." Leaving the message, called Auto-responder, others know that you are going on vacation.
